Our friends Ali and Sam were planning a quick getaway to a family cabin up in Boone, NC, and asked if we’d like to tag along with them, their little one, and pup – uh, yes please! So after work on Friday, we packed a couple small bags and met them up at the mountain house late that evening. Ali spent time there as a child, so after the tour and some midnight snacks, we all said our goodnights and headed to bed.
We woke up Saturday morning and headed into town for breakfast at a place where Ali and Sam knew the owners, Sunrise Grill. It was mind-blowingly delicious and we each got different things so we could try a little bit of everything. There was a little shop with a bubble machine set up outside next door that the little one was immediately drawn to, so we all laughed and ran through the bubbles for a good half an hour.
We drove over to downtown Boone and walked off our massive brunch around the old streets for a while. We stopped into the iconic Mast General Store to fill a couple bags of candy, and I booed loudly as we walked past the App State college stores – as the proud Georgia Southern grad I am. (All jokes aside, Boone would be an awesome little place to live in while you’re at school… but Hail Southern, GATA, GEORGIAAA-SOUTHERNNN.)
It was starting to drizzle so went back to the cabin for a while, but it cleared up quickly. We took advantage of the little break in the weather and decided to take a walk around the neighborhood as the mist hung around the mountaintops. Ali pointed out her family’s old cabin, and we looked for garden fairies hiding in all the yards with every rustle of the leaves.
After rolling down the hills back to the cabin, the boys drove into town to pick up a Happy Meal and some pizza. After dinner, we grown-ups played a few board games, watched movies, and talked about Sam and Ali’s upcoming wedding this fall. Eric had a flight to catch for work Sunday evening, so we packed up and made the trip back down the mountains after breakfast Sunday. Even though it was a really quick trip, getting away with friends and not having any plans was a very welcome break away from all of our busy schedules. Friends are the family you get to choose, and I’m so glad these two crazies choose to put up with us!
